GPS Connectivity Question:

How do I connect IDC to my GPS?

Answer:

Follow the procedures below:

1). Connect the GPS to your laptop/PC.
  • If your system only has USB ports and you have a serial GPS you will need to purchase a USB to serial adapter. In this case connect the USB to serial adapter to a spare USB port. Connect the GPS to the USB serial adapter.

  • If you have a USB GPS connect the GPS to a spare USB port on your system.

  • If you have a Bluetooth GPS, activate the Bluetooth link on your system.

2). Turn on the GPS.
  • If you haven't configured the GPS to output NMEA 0183 data, do so now. For details on how to do this please refer to the documentation that came with your GPS.

  • Ensure that the NMEA output mode is set to ASCII.

  • Ensure that you make a note of any specific settings for the output of NMEA data, such as baud rate.

3). Run IDC, by double-clicking on the IDC - Imray Digital Charts icon on the desktop. If IDC prompts you to connect to your GPS, click No.

4). You will now need to configure the GPS settings in IDC to match the settings of your GPS.
  • Locate the Tools menu and select Devices from the list of menu items.

  • In the Device Settings, window under GPS ensure that the Comm Port number matches the port on which the GPS is connected.

  • Select the Baud Rate that matches the GPS settings you noted earlier.

  • If your GPS is set to output NMEA data with checksums, check the Enable Checksums checkbox.

  • If you GPS does not output checksums ensure that the Enable Checksums checkbox is NOT ticked or all data received from the GPS will be rejected.

  • You can if you wish change the timeout value for the GPS; this will be dependent on the update rate of your GPS. If the GPS keeps timing out, trying increasing the timeout value.
5). Click the Test Port Settings button.

6). You should now see data being received via the GPS in the Test Port Settings window.

7). Click the OK button.

8). Now locate the Tools menu and select GPS Mode OFF from the list of menu items. Or click on the Toggle GPS on/off button on the toolbar.

9). IDC will now attempt to connect to the GPS.
